Novell ZENworks & the UIU

Universal Imaging Utility and ZENworks team up to enhance organization's computer migration and rollout tasks

A recognized leader in the office equipment industry has turned to the Universal Imaging Utility to streamline their desktop migration and cloning of their 3,000 computers. Using the UIU along with Novell ZENworks Suite, this company has seen benefits in several areas.

Image Storage

Prior to adopting the UIU, they had amassed cloning images that totaled nearly 400 gigabytes of disk space. Because standard cloning images are not compatible between different hardware types, IT personnel needed to create, maintain and update more than 20 different master images.

Now, with using the UIU, the organization has reduced the storage space dedicated to image files to 10GB and the number of master images to two (by their choice, one for laptops/desktops and one for a department requiring a separate, unique configuration).

More Frequent Updates

The resulting fewer images has uncovered another added benefit for this UIU customer. Having to maintain such a small number of images allows them to more easily keep the images up-to-date with the latest security patches and service packs. Moreover, where they historically refreshed images once or twice per year, they now can do it quarterly with far less effort, ensuring that their users take advantage of the latest system updates.

Shipping & Handling or Depot Service

Until the organization began using the UIU, computers needed to be shipped to their East coast offices for re-imaging. This necessitated paying $40-$60, on average four times per week, to expedite a rush delivery to the end user.

Using the UIU and taking advantage of the fact that one image can be sent to any hardware type, the company now utilizes their network to re-image remote machines. This allows the end user to be productive in a fraction of the time and eliminates their shipping charges entirely. This not only eliminates $8,000-$12,000 in shipping costs but eliminates the inherent risks of shipping equipment around the country.

Standardization

By keeping only two images instead of more than 20, the company has eliminated repetitive tasks associated with image creation, updating and maintenance. Beyond that, they no longer need to keep track of which image is needed for a particular computer; instead, they now use a version control number embedded in the Windows registry to quickly identify how many machines in production are running what version of the corporate image. This reduces disaster recovery times, allowing the company's IT personnel to instantly re-image a select number of computers via their network when a problem related to a particular image version is found.
